A Little Reflection

Some Reflection on this Project

Things I learned. The process, although I've done game art before. I never did a lot of it. I learned how to create a process, that's fast, and just pump out more and more assets. Something an art class doesn't teach are these production values.

I also learned a lot about how lighting/values can really affect a final art composition. I played a lot with patterns and shapes. I designed characters to be different as I can while also trying to keep them similar. I learned how clothing and shapes can really define character vibes.

I also learned about RPG Maker more, and how to insert things into it and modify events. Updating dialogue images almost gave me RSI though, it has weaknesses for bigger projects. But the upside is there's no time needed to code in there.

Towards the end when Henry added the events, I could feel more motivated to make art for the game. Since I could then test the art in the game and refine it based on the game. Many of the times, small tweaks are needed after.

Henry was good to work with. We had a good work flow towards the end, but it took a lot of time to just get used to the tools and workflows. Projects like these should preferably be a bit longer.

I wanted to make music, but in the end we just went with ambience as we wanted to keep the focus on the dialogue and character interactions.

When Henry added footsteps and other sounds, and it really added to the immersion. Sound is extremely important to games I've learned.

Things I would improve. Next time I would be able to pump out art quicker as I am now used to Aseprite and RPG Maker. I would also be able to plan the assets better. I wasn't familiar with drawing dialogue sprites, but now I am.

I wish I had been able to replace more of the environment art, as I feel if colours of the entire scene are matching, we can create moods better. I would of also liked some nice piano music in there. Perhaps playing off a CD player.

We could of also added more things to do on the first day. As this helps to create a sense of place. Having a 'school day' scene would also add to the familiarity of every day life for this high schooler.
